Palliative oncology

To support care and accommodate patients’ needs along their cancer journey, our recommendations in the area of palliative oncology are to:

Increase research efforts to evaluate the optimal organization of supportive care because emerging cancer treatments often permit a substantial life prolongation.
Integrate supportive care teams or home care teams into oncological care; implementation should depend on proven clinical effectiveness.
Promote development and assessment of educational programmes teaching palliative care professionals how to recognize and mitigate potentially life-threatening side effects resulting from speciﬁc treatments (targeted drugs, immunotherapy).
